Webber Wins From Pole to Claim Championship Lead

Mark Webber became the first Australian for 51 years — since Sir Jack (Blackjack) Brabbham in 1959 — to claim victory in the Monaco Grand Prix, spearheading a Red Bull Racing one-two and catapulting himself to the top of the championship standings.

For the second consecutive race (and 4th win of his career), Webber won from pole, keeping his cool through four safety car periods to win ahead of team mate Sebastien Vettel. “Absolutely incredible, for sure this is the greatest day of my life today,” Webber said immediately after the race.

Renault’s Robert Kubica placed third, with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa fourth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren. Fernando Alonso made huge strides from the back of the grid but was nipped for sixth by Michael Schumacher as the safety car pulled off on the last lap — ended under yellow due to a backmarker accident at La Rascase — with the pass under review by race stewards.
