In the 1981 German GP at the Hockenheimring, Alan Jones for Williams waged an epic battle with Alain Prost’s Renault — with the Frenchman starting from pole for the first time in his F1 career — on the long straights through the (now defunct) forest sections. Jones set fastest lap but faded to 11th after a misfire, with Prost taking the checkered flag in second place behind Nelson Piquet.

It was a notable race for the fact that it would be the very last time without a chicane before the Ostkurve. 1982 would see a chicane added to slow speeds down going into the Ostkurve, and it would remain that way until the final race would be held in 2001. It was a sad day when the long straights were eliminated in favor of the much shortened track that retains none of what made the Hockenheimring so special.
