Sunday’s race was an instant classic, a fascinating strategic battle that remained in the balance right up until the chequered flag. In days past you would know what the race order was after the final round of pit stops. Not any more.
I can understand those who argue that this isn’t “classic wheel-to-wheel racing;” that the overtaking is not between two similarly matched cars on identical strategies. But I think we often look back at the past with rose-tinted specs. No two cars are ever the same. In the days of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna they had different engines, turbos. Before that the machines differed hugely on a mechanical rather than an aerodynamic level.

There is so much cause for optimism: the title race is wide open (although we still need Ferrari to come to the party), the racing compelling and the driving of the highest order.
