Late Red Flag Saves Sebastian Vettel in Monaco Thriller

Sebastian Vettel got lucky in the gamblers paradise Sunday as he emerged victorious from a stormy Monaco Grand Prix. The reigning F1 driver’s titleist took a massive risk by staying on the same set of option (soft) tires — a move that looked set to backfire as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button chased him for the last 15 laps of the race. But Vettel hit the jackpot when a crash between Vitaly Petrov and Jaime Alguersuari on lap 72 red-flagged the session just as he was about to be caught. That allowed Vettel to change his tires and the last few laps became a procession as the World Champion eased to his fifth victory in six races this term.

Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner believes the team would not have been able to recover from the mix-up that saw soft tires fitted to Sebastian Vettel’s car at his only pit stop and capture the had it not been for the young champion’s “awesome” driving on the fast-fading rubber.
