For some reason the passion at Scuderia Ferrari and its loyal Tifosi followers brings out the best in pilots on their first occasion driving for the Scuderia. Beginning with legendary Juan Manuel Fangio in 1956 (who actually shared P1 after taking over the car of teammate Luigi Musso mid-race), continuing with the amazing maiden appearance by F1 rookie Giancarlo Baghetti in 1961, reaching a crescendo with the emotional victory by Il Leone Nigel Mansell in 1989 at Jacarepagua, and continuing through the equally remarkable — although not checkered flag — podium finish by Sebastian Vettel in 2015’s Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne, the scarlet cars have seen a disproportionate number of great performances by drivers in their first race for Ferrari. These are the best of the best, ranked subjectively by F1A&G.
Quite a few mistakes here. Mario Andretti won on his first race for Ferrari in South Africa 1971. Baghetti won with a privateer Ferrari in 1961 -a great result without question, but not his debut for the works team which came in 1962, when he was only 4th at Zandvoort. Finally, Niki Lauda was second on his debut at Argentina in 1974 -better than Seb’s third place.
